The perfect wine climate

If you are a wine lover, the Chilean capital of Santiago is well worth a visit. The city is wedged between a number of famous wine regions, and only a short drive from the capital are several other interesting regions. Chilean winemakers enjoy introducing visitors to their exquisite creations.

A Mediterranean climate

Chile is home to pretty much every extreme climate on the planet: from the dry Atacama Desert in the north to the icy plains of Patagonia in the south. But the climate around Santiago is Mediterranean, with summer temperatures above 30 degrees Celsius and winter temperatures that seldom drop below 15 degrees. These are the ideal conditions for growing the grapes to make wine. It is therefore no surprise that most wine regions are located close to Santiago, and the one closest to the Chilean capital is Maipo. Here you will find rolling vineyards with winding roads set against the spectacular snow-capped peaks of the Andes.

Barbecue and a glass of wine

The La Montaña wine region is approximately an hour's drive from the centre of Santiago. Visitors can explore the mountainous region on foot or even by rappel. Conclude the tour with a Chilean barbecue accompanied, of course, by wine produced at La Montaña. Nearby is the estate of Pérez Cruz, a winery that stands out for its distinctive architecture. The building has been designed to blend in with the surrounding natural scenery.

Aromatic wines

Towards the coast, about 75 km west of Santiago, lies the Casablanca wine region. The salty sea air creates crisp, aromatic wines, thanks to the cool morning mist that covers the vineyards. Make sure to visit the Emiliana vineyard, known for its production of organic wine. In addition to wine tasting, visitors may also sample delicious cheese and chocolate. The company also has vineyards in other wine regions.

Wine bars in the city

You don’t have to leave Santiago to taste delicious Chilean wines. The city boasts various wine bars that serve up an overwhelming selection - for example Bocanariz, right in the centre of Santiago, lists 300 local wines on its menu. If you cannot make a choice, just order one of the tasting samples, you will not be disappointed. Cheers!
